A Journey Through Another World Wiki

Alan (アレン)? is the oldest of two twin children of the Water God.

In the anime adaptation, he is voiced by Aina Suzuki, a Japanese voice actress and singer best known for voicing Jashin-chan in Dropkick on My Devil!. In the English dub, he is voiced by Lara Woodhull.[2]

Background[]

According to the God of Wind Sylphyryll, during his Idle Talk 2 (a side insert found only as a whole in the light novel, with portions separately adapted into Ch. 16Manga and Ch. 28Manga), the God of Water Wyndell, a known womanizer, impregnated a human Etelldian woman, who died while giving birth to twin children as she could not hold giving birth to demi-gods (a chance of one in several hundred billion of happening), much less demi-gods inheriting the powers of their father (an even lower chance, according to Syl). Because Wyndell was not present at their birth (as, according to Syl, he was in another dimension, enjoying a honeymoon with at least one out of many other Etelldian women he irresponsibly indulged in), their care and fate ended up in the hands of a "miser landlord", who sold them to a slave trader while Wyndell's retainers, the water nagas (who frequently kept tabs on the twins from afar, as they had no authority to directly interact with, or even travel together with, children of the God of Water), painfully watched. Under the slave trader's ownership, when they were still babies, the twins destroyed their crib in self-defense when their demi-godly instincts (as they indeed had inherited Wyndell's godly powers) took over their infant bodies. Even though such powers went dormant deep into their bodies after that crib incident, their preposterous potential led their owner to lock them up into a dark basement for years (with the Water God retainers again being unable to intervene).

When the twins turned five years old, one day, sometime before the events of Ch. 3WN / Ch. 1Manga / Ep. 1Anime, the slave trader departed from the kingdom of Algo towards the Guadian town of Shireen, passing through the Forest of Gaia (according to a report by Adventurer's Guild receptionist Luna in Ch. 10WN / Ch. 3Manga / Ep. 1Anime). There, the trader was attacked by monsters; seeing his escort caravan nowhere, he ordered his subordinates to drop the girl as bait for the monsters so that he could escape (according to the boy's own recollection of events in the first half of Idle Talk 1, which was adapted as a flashback into Ch. 16Manga / Ep. 5Anime), to which her brother protested, leading him to be also dumped towards the monsters along with his sister. Since then, the kids spent their lives living in the Forest, surviving alone in the midst of monsters, until a recently-revived Takumi Kayano, while wandering around in the Forest after being sent there by Sylphyryll, found them by accident (not knowing their identities); they had sad and worrisome faces, were dirty, and were not talking at all. Casting Appraise on both of them, Takumi saw their age, level (back then 12), and their five skills: Water Magic, Martial Arts, Throw, Perception, and Resistance to Status Effects.[1] He then asked both to get closer to him, then he cast Wash on them,[3] then Heal,[3] then he served them Ranka fruit to end their hunger, and then gave them new clothes to wear.

Seing that they had no names, in Ch. 4WN (still Ch. 1Manga / Ep. 1Anime) Takumi named the twins Alan and Elena before bringing them along on his adventure. Suddenly, the twins started to run away in a hurry; when Takumi saw they were running towards a trio of giant boars, he alerted them to stop before they could get hurt by the monsters. Takumi thought about casting magic against the Boars but then backed out, for fear of hitting both twins as collateral damage (just like he was accidentally hit by Sylphyryll not long ago in the real world), until he saw both Alan and Elena kicking and defeating the monsters as if they were weak creatures, much to Takumi's own amazement. After patting their heads as a reward, he then asked them to first alert him about any incoming monsters before taking any actions against them - an advice they followed upon sighting a bloody bear whom they easily defeated with Dash, after which Takumi retrieved its meat as loot for either consumption or sale. Later in Ch. 5WN (still Ch. 1Manga / Ep. 1Anime) he taught them to gather items for various purposes, like i.e. sticks for lighting fires (which, after sparking with a flint, he used to cook the meat looted from the monsters the twins killed). After spending the night in a camp enclosed by a magic barrier Takumi created using a barrier stone, Alan and Elena started to grow closer to him and since then, the three would adventure together like a family of siblings... (with Alan further reflecting into this during the second half of Idle Talk 1 and the very beginning of Ch. 4Manga.)

 Appearance[]

Alan is a young boy possessing bright amber eyes and blue hair inherited from his father Wyndell, the Water God.

Prior to meeting Takumi, Alan wore a basic tattered, brown one-piece clothing. He was given new clothes that consisted of black shorts, a blue seifuku-like shirt with white and orange outlines, and ankle-length orange-brown boots. Before heading out to Bailey, Alan's shirt changes into a similar shirt but white in colour.

Personality[]

Alan has a very innocent and curious side of him. He is typically interesting in what boys are at the age Alan is, but that's about all that's normal in comparison. As a child of a God, his abilities and learning speed are far more advanced than the kids his age, yet he still makes it a habit to behave his age though, exploring his environment, new foods, and new animals or monsters with an unrelenting drive.

He is the older twin, and as such is developing a protective personality akin to Takumi towards his younger twin. Despite acting most of the time in unison with Elena, his boyish nature does shine through at times, showing his own unique personality like liking cool-looking things or finding things like hawking gauntlets cool so he can bond closer to Bolt.

He tends to overcome his shyness more easily than his sister, and usually when he learns to trust someone other than Takumi, Elena follows suit soon after. He loves to explore dungeons as it gives him a chance to unwind while also satiating his curiosity. He is very much like an explorer, and as his adventures continue, he begins to show signs that he is what he wishes to be in the future.
