A contracted beast (契約獣, keiyakujū)^? is a special Etelldian monster that has been contracted to any person who can use Dark Magic. These beasts may often be distinguished from other (non-contracted) members of their own species by possessing additional skills beyond those usually wielded by their own kin.

Abilities

To avoid calling the attention of civilian passersby (as well as to avoid raising suspicions from other adventurers), contracted beasts can be ordered to hide into their contract holders' shadows. Ch. 18^Manga explains that while hidden in their owners' shadows, the beasts nourish themselves with magic energy from the shadows, thus forgoing any need to consume food at all. But, they may choose to eat like their non-contracted brethren whenever they are out of the shadows; also, if they possess a special skill like Shrink, then they may only need to consume a fraction of what they would usually need to eat while at full size.

Beasts contracted to Takumi Kayano

The following beasts were contracted to Takumi Kayano by the Gods of Etelldia, sometimes as gifts for performing special favors

• Joule - a fenrir gifted to him by the water nagas as a thank-you for taking care of the Water God's twin children Alan and Elena.
• Feat - a heavenly tiger gifted to him by Sylphyryll.
• Bolt - a thunder hawk also gifted to him by Sylphyryll.
• Vector - a scarlet king leo.
