Johan

Johan (ヨハン, Johan)^? is the Guild Master (ギルドマスター, Guild Master)^? at the Adventurer's Guild in Shireen, Guadia, Etelldia.

In the anime adaptation, he is voiced by Kazumasa Nakamura (中村和正, Kazumasa Nakamura)^?. In the English dub, he is voiced by David Wald.^[1]

Background[]

The then-unnamed Shireen guild master is first shown in Ch. 11^WN (near the endings of Ch. 3^Manga and Ep. 1^Anime) when receptionist Luna asks knight Granvault Lowain whether he was going to talk to the master. Vault responds with a positive, then he goes upstairs to the master's office. There, Vault asks the guild master about an upcoming expedition to the Forest of Gaia and whether he can enlist Takumi Kayano into it in spite of his low F-rank status.

The guild master makes his second appearance at the end of Ch. 12^Manga when Luna inquires him about knight Rudolf's visit to his office. He responds with Rudolf's report about the expedition's battle against bloody wolves and an evil viper and that everyone got out alive (in spite of some injuries). Upon hearing from the master that both types of monsters were defeated by Takumi, she wonders if Takumi has collected materials from such monsters, which seem to command high prices on the market, until the guild master interrupts her (asking her to "come back to Earth") and asks her to bring him Takumi to raise his rank.

His name is revealed in Ch. 13^Manga to be Johan when Takumi is brought to him by Luna by recommendation of Vault and Rudolf. After Johan reveals Takumi the testimonies brought to him by Vault and Rudolf about the feats Takumi achieved during their Forest of Gaia expedition (namely, the defeats of the bloody wolves and the evil viper) in spite of his rather-not-quite-strong bodily looks, the guild master offers to raise his rank to A (the maximum he can give; he later remarks that to raise him to S-rank, the permission of multiple guild masters would be required). But, because of his companions Alan and Elena still being E-rank, that would prevent his party from taking high-rank quests as the party's rank becomes the average of the ranks of its individual members (on which case it would be D-rank). Thus, Johan agress to raise their ranks to D (which would average their party's rank to C, which Takumi finds acceptable for the meantime without drawing unnecessary suspicions from onlookers).

Appearance[]

Johan is shown in the anime to have hazelnut-colored hair and mustache, as well as eyes of a color that leans towards a dark grayish hue of blue or purple. He wears a green military-style uniform, with black elliptic inserts on the shoulders, each one holding two golden buttons from which orange-gold cords hang.
