Takumi Kayano (タクミ・カヤノ)?, originally born in the real world as Kayano Takumi (茅野 巧)?, is the lead protagonist in A Journey Through Another World: Raising Kids While Adventuring. Alan and Elena give him the nickname Taku (お兄ちゃん Onīchan;? lit. 'Big Brother').
In the anime adaptation, he is voiced by Japanese voice actor Yusuke Shirai. In the English dub, he is voiced by Matt Shipman.[9]
Background[]
Takumi Kayano was accidentally killed when God of Wind Sylphyryll used his powers to mend a rift in space-time. Syl accidentally used too much power and ended up hitting Takumi, who happened to be on the other side, ending his life at the age of 28.
Takumi's soul was saved and reborn in a new, younger body created by Sylphyryll's powers. With the blessing of Marianolla and given general God-level information, he was allowed to live in Etelldia. Secretly, as the Disciple of the Wind God, Takumi would be eventually and unknowingly tasked to care for Alan and Elena, the rare Water God's Children.
Etymology[]
"Kayano" (茅野) can mean a "field of Miscanthus or silvergrass reeds". It is an actual Japanese surname; Tokyo voice actress Ai Kayano is a notable example.[10]
"Takumi" (巧) comes from 巧み takumi, a keiyō-dōshi or na-adjective which can mean "skillful, dexterous, ingenuous, or clever".[11]
The kanji name "茅野 巧" is only used to refer to Takumi in his previous, 28-year-old, real-world life in Japan (before being killed by Sylphyryll). As expected of Japanese names, it is written (and in Japanese, read) in Eastern naming order as Kayano Takumi.
The katakana name "タクミ・カヤノ" is only used to refer to him in his current, 20-to-21-year-old adventurer life in Etelldia. Like all other names in Etelldia, which originate from Western names and words, it is written and read in Western naming order as Takumi Kayano.
Appearance[]
Takumi has white skin and black hair (leaning towards dark gray blue) with a prominent ahoge that points forward. In the light novel's cover illustrations, he is portrayed as having green eyes, but in the manga covers and the anime, he is shown instead with aqua- or teal-colored eyes. On top of a white undershirt, he wears a dark-navy-blue long-sleeve suit or jacket; in the anime, the jacket has a folded-down neck collar, three buttons, and two side pockets which are lined with sky-blue borders on top. He also wears brown finger-less handgloves. His trousers are colored beige in the anime. His boots, which in the anime are three-quarters knee-high, match the same color as his jacket or suit.
Personality[]
As a human on Earth (specifically in Japan),[12] Takumi was terribly unathletic, as he confesses in Ch. 9Manga (and reconfirms in Ch. 13Manga during his meeting with the Shireen guild master). He preferred to play instead video games and read adventure books (as he describes in Ch. 7Manga while pondering what he would buy Alan next time he visits the shop where he bought Elena a pair of black ribbons for tying her hair); in Ch. 14Manga he confirms that he used to read on average ten books a month.
Despite his previous life, Takumi has taken his situation with the philosophy as "Go with the flow", hinting at his alignment with both the God of Wind and the God of Water. Despite his laidback personality, whenever he feels annoyed or irritated that the God of Wind is being a bit too boastful about bringing Takumi to this new world, he will usually jab back passively that he was brought because of that god's very mistake and had no real choice in the matter. Takumi was an only child in his previous life, but was well loved by those he bonded with.
He tends to have an overprotective side towards Alan and Elena, often doting on them. Most of the time he is passively competitive towards the twins; since they can level up so fast, he feels like if he doesn't increase his own level or skills, they might not look up to him if they did surpass him. In his free time, he makes books, toys, or new dishes from his previous world to enrich the lives of the twins, but sometimes he does it because of his own selfishness.citation needed

Because his body was personally modified by the Wind God and watched over by the other Gods of Etelldia, Takumi's potential is beyond S-rank: Hero class.
His usage of skills are natural and unorthodox due to not growing up in Etelldia, allowing new cultures and methods to be introduced in Etelldia's stagnant society.
